About California Scrub Oak

Quercus berberidifolia, the California Scrub Oak, is a small evergreen or semi-evergreen shrubby oak in the white oak section Quercus sect. Quercus. It is native to the scrubby hills of California, and is a common member of chaparral ecosystems. (The word "chaparral" is derived from the Spanish word for Scrub Oak, "chaparro," broadly meaning "short in stature.")

Quercus berberidifolia
typically grows from 3 to 7 feet tall, rarely to 20 feet, and has sharply toothed, dull green leaves which are leathery on their top surfaces and somewhat hairy underneath. The solitary or paired brown acorns are pointed or egg-shaped with thin caps when mature. In cooler, more exposed areas, California Scrub Oak is usually a small, compact shrub, but in warm or sheltered areas the plant can spread out and grow several meters high.

About Jonsteen's Bonsai Specials

Every so often, our bonsai master-in-residence, Will, hand-selects trees from the nursery that catch his eye for their unique bonsai qualities. These are truly one-of-a-kind specimens — the tree pictured here is the tree you'll get!

About Jonsteen's Seedlings

All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty!
