About Japanese Larch

Called “Kara-matsu” in its native Japan, Japanese Larch is a deciduous conifer whose needles turn a marvelous golden color each fall prior to falling. Displaying the unique tufted clusters of needles that characterize all Larches, the Japanese Larch distinguishes itself with foliage of a bluish, sea-green cast and rather squat cones. It’s an important forestry tree in its native land, producing wood that is tough and durable and used for many things.

At maturity, Japanese Larches are usually between 80 and 130 feet tall with strongly horizontal to pendulous branches. These trees live for several hundred years, and prefer very sunny locations with well-draining soils.

About Jonsteen's Bonsai Specials

Every so often, our bonsai master-in-residence, Will, hand-selects trees from the nursery that catch his eye for their unique bonsai qualities. These are truly one-of-a-kind specimens — the tree pictured here is the tree you'll get!

About Jonsteen's Seedlings

All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty!
