Nursery Note: Fall and winter are seasons of âdormancyâ for most trees in most places, and, as a result, even so-called evergreen trees display a distinct change of color during these seasons. Our trees are no exception. If the trees appear bronze, reddish, or brown-tipped, don't worry! Be assured, they are absolutely healthy. Bronzing reflects a normal, natural, seasonal color fluctuation â so please enjoy the colorful trees of winter!

About Coast Redwood
An ancient Coast Redwood, growing deep behind the âRedwood Curtainâ in Humboldt County, California, is the worldâs tallest living thing. This tree, located in a California State Park, towers nearly 400 feet into the sky, and is approaching 2,000 years of age.
Commonly reaching breathtaking heights, the magnificent, column-like Coast Redwood is not only the worldâs tallest tree, but also one of the worldâs most long-lived, with life-spans of more than 2,000 years. Fossil records also indicate that the species is among the most ancient of trees â its lineage dating back 160 million years.
At maturity, typical Coast Redwoods tower 175 to 300 feet, and have massive trunks (8 feet to an astounding 20 feet in diameter!) with deeply furrowed, reddish-brown bark. Today, only about 5% of Americaâs primeval Coast Redwoods remain, most under state and federal protection. This species is truly one of the natural wonders of Planet Earth.

Seedling Size Chart: Small
Due to the dynamic nature of actively growing trees, as well as the tremendous variation between speciesâ growth rates, we rely on the cubic volume of a seedlingâs root mass to determine its âsizeâ (Small / Medium / Large / XL). Within each size there is minor variance â the dimensions provided here represent the category minimum. If exact measurements are essential, please contact us about current stock.
Caring for Redwoods
As its name implies, the Coast Redwood is a coastal species, native to the foggy, temperate regions of the far northern California coastline. This tree should be grown in areas where winter temperatures only occasionally drop below freezing. It loves misting, and thrives where it can receive a generous supply of water (although, like most plants, it cannot tolerate constantly water-logged soils and definitely enjoys the opportunity to dry out somewhat in-between waterings).
The Coast Redwood can withstand some cold temperatures, but will not tolerate prolonged periods of sub-freezing weather. In terms of heat, the Coast Redwood can withstand significant periods of hot weather provided enough water is available. In hot climates, partial shading and occasional misting is advised for the Coast Redwood. In regions with colder climates, the Coast Redwood may be successfully housed indoors temporarily for the cold season, or protected in the landscape through heavy mulching.
