About Eastern White Pine

This lovely and large 5-needle pine hails from the central and eastern United States and southeast Canada. It is the State Tree of both Maine and Michigan, as well as the Provincial Tree of Ontario. This tree has been one of the most historically significant trees in the eastern U.S., playing a huge role in the American lumber industry of the 1800’s. Eastern White Pine goes by several common names, including “Northern White Pine,” “Soft Pine,” and “Pumpkin Pine.” It has been known as “Weymouth Pine” in England since 1730.

Characterized as “lovely, soft-looking, and gracious,” Eastern White Pine is a fast growing, excellent tree for reforestation, landscaping, and use as a Christmas Tree. It is one of the most widely planted tree species found in America, and commonly lives to 200 years of age (but has been known to survive to more than 450 years old). Eastern White Pine can reach heights of more than 200 feet, but is typically shorter, around 130 feet tall at maturity, with a nice straight trunk, great symmetry, and wispy, distinctively whorled, upturning branches, which give it a very picturesque quality. The long, soft needles have a bluish-green cast, and the tree’s cones are also lovely — slender, highly resinous, 4”–8” long, with showy silvery tips.

Eastern White Pine grows best under sunny conditions in rich, acidic, well-drained soils, and is exceedingly cold-hardy (to -50°F). Songbirds love to eat White Pine seeds, and bald eagles often choose Eastern White Pines for their tree-top nests.

About Jonsteen's Seedlings

All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty!

About Jonsteen's 100% Guarantee

All of our trees are guaranteed to arrive healthy and in good condition. If your tree perishes despite your honest efforts, we will be happy to replace it with a small-sized seedling for just the cost of shipping/handling. You can learn more about our guarantee and tree replacement policy here.

Seedling Size Chart: Small

Due to the dynamic nature of actively growing trees, as well as the tremendous variation between species’ growth rates, we rely on the cubic volume of a seedling’s root mass to determine its “size” (Small / Medium / Large / XL). Within each size there is minor variance — the dimensions provided here represent the category minimum. If exact measurements are essential, please contact us about current stock.
