About the Clonal Redwoods
These are very special Coast Redwood trees! These are not Jonsteen’s typical wild-collected, seed-grown Sequoia sempervirens seedlings. These trees are clones from a major redwood timber company’s genetics program, selected over decades to optimize fast growth rate, trunk uniformity, and desirable branching patterns. Under the right conditions, these likely represent the fastest growing phenotype of Coast Redwood in the world.
These trees were first grown from cuttings taken decades ago from a spectacular old growth redwood tree found in the forest. The mother tree was a champion specimen, a tree with characteristics and genetics perfect for producing not only big, beautiful future trees, but gorgeous redwood timber products as well. The mother tree was a magnificent specimen that stopped foresters in their tracks! Queen of the forest!
A half century’s worth of critically selecting and high-grading the “best of the best” seedlings from these original genetics brings us to the amazing trees we have here. Straight trunks, well-formed and well-angled branching, super-fast growing, improved cold-hardiness, and better drought-tolerance are the big selling points for these clonal redwoods.
Please note, though they are propagated through cuttings, these are still “natural” redwood trees. They do not have genetic modifications. Their natural genetics have simply been “chosen” based on certain standards and reproduced through vegetative propagation. Clonal redwood trees are not dangerous to the environment; they will simply bring their strong positive characteristics to the forests or yards where they are grown. Only you will know about this tree’s special characteristics, unique qualities, and provenance. To the rest of the world, it’ll just be “that spectacular redwood tree”!
This is a very limited offering. These trees would be a true boon to any small land-owner who wants to benefit from the multi-million dollar research of a major timber company. Grow a forest of champion trees on your acreage! For the rest of us, these trees are an opportunity to plant a very special coast redwood that has never been, and is not likely to ever again be, on the consumer market.
About Jonsteen's Seedlings
All of our trees are grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty!
About Jonsteen's 100% Guarantee
All of our trees are guaranteed to arrive healthy and in good condition. If your tree perishes despite your honest efforts, we will be happy to replace it with a small-sized seedling for just the cost of shipping/handling. You can learn more about our guarantee and tree replacement policy here.
Seedling Size Chart: Medium
Due to the dynamic nature of actively growing trees, as well as the tremendous variation between species’ growth rates, we rely on the cubic volume of a seedling’s root mass to determine its “size” (Small / Medium / Large / XL). Within each size there is minor variance — the dimensions provided here represent the category minimum. If exact measurements are essential, please contact us about current stock.

Caring for Redwoods
As its name implies, the Coast Redwood is a coastal species, native to the foggy, temperate regions of the far northern California coastline. This tree should be grown in areas where winter temperatures only occasionally drop below freezing. It loves misting, and thrives where it can receive a generous supply of water (although, like most plants, it cannot tolerate constantly water-logged soils and definitely enjoys the opportunity to dry out somewhat in-between waterings).
The Coast Redwood can withstand some cold temperatures, but will not tolerate prolonged periods of sub-freezing weather. In terms of heat, the Coast Redwood can withstand significant periods of hot weather provided enough water is available. In hot climates, partial shading and occasional misting is advised for the Coast Redwood. In regions with colder climates, the Coast Redwood may be successfully housed indoors temporarily for the cold season, or protected in the landscape through heavy mulching.
