About Serbian Spruce

Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika) is endemic to a tiny area of the former Yugoslavia, where just 1,000 individual trees are all that remain of this species' native stand. (According to the fossil record, the species was more widespread throughout Europe prior to the Pleistocene Ice Age.) The 120-acre indigenous range is localized on the limestone slopes bordering the Drina River Valley and crosses between what is now Serbia and Bosnia.

Serbian Spruce, initially thought of as a rare novelty, first came to America in the late 1800's. By the turn of the century, this distinctively downswept, often very narrow, and always graceful tree was in wide use, considered among the very finest of ornamental evergreens — a vaunted status it retains to this day. Serbian Spruces feature a slender trunk and short, descending branches decorated with short, sharp needles that are glossy, dark green on top, silvery-blue underneath. This color scheme lends a wonderful two-tone effect to the foliage, and makes this tree especially entertaining when animated by the wind.

A moderate to slow-growing tree, Serbian Spruce typically achieves heights of 60 feet, but specimens have been noted at well over 160 feet tall. Serbian Spruces are not picky when it comes to soil types, are especially at home in limestone-based soils. They are also more tolerant of hot, humid climates and air pollution than most other Spruces. Serbian Spruce's narrow form and small footprint commend it to tight spaces, where it will happily reach toward the heavens for decades without crowding its neighbors.

About Jonsteen's Seedlings

All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty!

About Jonsteen's 100% Guarantee

All of our trees are guaranteed to arrive healthy and in good condition. If your tree perishes despite your honest efforts, we will be happy to replace it with a small-sized seedling for just the cost of shipping/handling. You can learn more about our guarantee and tree replacement policy here.

Seedling Size Chart: Small

Due to the dynamic nature of actively growing trees, as well as the tremendous variation between species’ growth rates, we rely on the cubic volume of a seedling’s root mass to determine its “size” (Small / Medium / Large / XL). Within each size there is minor variance — the dimensions provided here represent the category minimum. If exact measurements are essential, please contact us about current stock.

Great trees

I have bought 4 of these trees now and only 1 has died, (that was my fault not the companies) these are amazing trees, I have tried to grow them from seed before from a cone with very little success. So I looked on the internet for people who sell them and these are the only guys. These trees came quick and were very healthy. I replanted them into a pot and put them under a grow light. After about a week they started to develop new branches and really grow. I have had them for about 2 months now and new growth has almost fully developed. I have struggled a lot with keeping and growing trees before so let me give you some tips to help you keep your Serbian Spruce alive and happy. 1. Give it a lot of light, they love full sun and are very drought resistant once established. 2. give it some fertilizer once a year, so that way it can grow to be the biggest it can be. 3. Be patient, these trees can be slow growers, they can grow anywhere between less then 1 foot to 2 feet plus a year. Like I said at the beginning they are amazing trees and cant wait until they are full grown!
