About Arizona Cypress
Arizona Cypress is the only cypress native to America’s Southwest. It occurs naturally in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Northern Mexico, typically growing on dry, rocky mountain slopes. The Arizona Cypress is a sun-loving tree with lovely, peeling reddish-brown bark and lacey gray foliage, which grows in dense, sprays. The individual “leaves” are scale-like and rounded, not flat — their grayish-green, bluish-green, or silvery color, lends a distinct shimmering appearance to the foliage.
Arizona Cypress is an extremely drought-tolerant species, requiring only about 12 inches of water annually, and preferring a full-sun location. Though a slow-grower under natural dry conditions, it is a rapid grower (up to 3 feet per year) on better soils with plentiful moisture. Arizona Cypress generally requires little maintenance, and is very heat tolerant as well as cold-hardy to -15°F. The Arizona Cypress is a popular landscape tree throughout the South and on the West Coast, as well as in its native range. It produces shiny, metallic-looking, plated cones up to an inch in diameter that remain closed for years. The cones look like mini soccer balls.
Generally, Arizona Cypresses are a medium-sized tree at maturity, growing to heights between 50 and 95 feet, with trunks of 1 to 2 feet across. The form is loosely pyramidal, becoming more open and rounded with age. These trees are extremely drought-tolerant and practically canker-immune. They make excellent windbreaks, adapt to many soils, tolerate full sun and high heat, and handle cold temperatures surprisingly well. Arizona Cypress can live to the ripe old age of 700 years.
About Jonsteen's Seedlings
All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty!
About Jonsteen's 100% Guarantee
All of our trees are guaranteed to arrive healthy and in good condition. If your tree perishes despite your honest efforts, we will be happy to replace it with a small-sized seedling for just the cost of shipping/handling. You can learn more about our guarantee and tree replacement policy here.
Seedling Size Chart: Small
Due to the dynamic nature of actively growing trees, as well as the tremendous variation between species’ growth rates, we rely on the cubic volume of a seedling’s root mass to determine its “size” (Small / Medium / Large / XL). Within each size there is minor variance — the dimensions provided here represent the category minimum. If exact measurements are essential, please contact us about current stock.
