About Japanese Maple

One of 21 maple species native to Japan, Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) boasts the most airy and delicate aesthetic of all. Though no species has produced as many varieties, our "common" Japanese Maples have not only an uncommon grace and beauty, they are more rugged (withstanding more sun and wind), faster growing, and more drought-resistant than other, named forms.

The leaves of Japanese Maple are 2 – 4 inches long with 5 – 9 deeply cut fine-toothed lobes, and are the source of the Japanese common name for the species, "Kaede" (meaning "frog paws"). The slow growing Japanese Maple stays fairly small (usually around 25 feet tall), and provides year-round interest. Young spring growth is glowing red; summer's leaves are soft green; fall foliage is scarlet, orange, or yellow; and slender, leafless branches in greens and reds provide winter appeal. Hardy enough to succeed in most climates, Japanese Maple prefers filtered sunlight and little wind.

(Also available to grow from seed.)

About Jonsteen's Seedlings

All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty!

About Jonsteen's 100% Guarantee

All of our trees are guaranteed to arrive healthy and in good condition. If your tree perishes despite your honest efforts, we will be happy to replace it with a small-sized seedling for just the cost of shipping/handling. You can learn more about our guarantee and tree replacement policy here.

Seedling Size Chart: Small

Due to the dynamic nature of actively growing trees, as well as the tremendous variation between species’ growth rates, we rely on the cubic volume of a seedling’s root mass to determine its “size” (Small / Medium / Large / XL). Within each size there is minor variance — the dimensions provided here represent the category minimum. If exact measurements are essential, please contact us about current stock.

Stem/root healthy

I ordered 4, 3 had leaves 1 was in shock from shipping or started fall earlier than others losing all its leaves. Hope to transplant in the ground after few weeks in crowded pot :-) and stable. Hope they survive norcal weather and recover in spring 2025. I still recommend this store and typically happy with their support over the years. I just need to follow their detailed instructions

It was a bit bent over and gnarly looking, but it’s nothing that a support stake can’t fix. The leaves themselves looked beautiful and I can tell it’s a lovely Japanese maple variety. Thank you for the trees as always.

I am loving my little tree! The bonsai instructions were a little confusing to me, athough much appreciated. So I just potted like normal, but it is already growing!

Fantastic except for the Japanese Maples

All the trees I have bought have been very good to excelent. Until I recieved 3 Japanese Maples. One grew two to three times bigger and faster than the other two. The two bad ones have no sign of ne growth. I wish I could attach a picture.

Thanks for the review, Eric. Just a note that all of our trees are grown from seed, meaning each and every seedling is a genetic individual. So, it's not uncommon to see different growth habits from trees of the same crop. That said, keep in mind that all of our trees are backed by our tree replacement guarantee — just let us know if you lose either of your less vigorous seedlings, and we'll send you small-sized replacements for just the cost of shipping/handling. Thanks again for your review, and for growing trees!
